Annunciation series
This series includes twelve pieces which were displayed together in an
exhibition in 2005. In this series of small, intimate versions of the
Annunciation I incorporate contemporary images and explore a modern
understanding of Mary and her historical and multi-cultural influence. I use a
variety of tools and techniques (linoleum block stamps, photo transfers and
collaged elements) to build multiple layers of imagery and meaning.
I have always been fascinated with the rich historic tradition of the
Annunciation story. As an artist, it intrigues me that this story has been
studied and rendered hundreds of times, in every century and in every style,
developing its own splendid symbolic and visual vocabulary. And as a
Christian, this story inspires me to think about my personal Annunciation – my
answer to God’s call to create and to have faith in the possibility of the
impossible. Mary’s Magnificat speaks to us because we know that we share
her gift; within each of us is the seed of incarnation and the gift of grace.
