"Birdwatching" solo exhibition

August 19 - September 13, 2009

at Theatre Memphis in Memphis, TN

Collected here are images of the many pieces Caroline will have on display in

"Birdwatching," her first solo exhibition of 2009. The show ran from mid

August to mid September at Theatre Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.

Notes from an amateur ornithologist....

"Can you tell that I’ve taken up birdwatching??  We live in a rural area of

Northwest Tennessee with woods very nearby.  I’ve been told that it’s a

'flyway.'  That explains the wonderful diversity of bird species that stops to

snack at our feeders.  I watch the birds each morning, nursing that first cup of

coffee, excitedly looking up each new bird in my Peterson field guide.

"The birds I paint may not look exactly like the ones outside my window.  But I

try to convey the glory of their colorful or somber plumage, the character in

their expression and shape, and the simple joy of being able to take flight.  I

love the dichotomy of nesting and flight, two basic instincts that we share with

the birds.  And like the birds building their nests, I weave my collages together

with the collections of detritus and ephemera that is at hand in my studio --

paper doilies, book pages, stamps, strings, and tissue -- with words and

patterns that tell stories."

"Do you know," Peter asked, "why swallows build in the eaves of houses? It is

to listen to the stories."    -- J.M. Barrie in "Peter Pan"
